What's Going On With Onika?

What's Going On With Onika?

I’m going to apologize in advance for the numerous nicknames that I use in this article. Due to a crazed fan base and a celebrity who tends to search her name to lash out, I think it’s best to proceed this way. To start this off, I have to ask…has anyone checked on Onika? I mean really checked on her and showed concern for her well being because the self destructive behavior towards her career and others is getting harder to ignore. As someone who’s been a fan of Nickisha since she first came on the scene, it saddens me to see the route that she’s taken. She’s dominated the scene for the past ten years, and at this point, she should be busy growing her empire. Instead, the only thing she has to show for ten years of work is a messy radio show and a slew of altercations with other artists.

Has St. Nick always been this problematic? Thinking about it, I think she has and we just chose to let her rock. For 10+ years, she was the only female rapper, and she kept coming with endless bops. As a result, we just dealt her and her shenanigans. Now that a new wave of women rappers are on the scene, I can’t tell if N.M. is more upset about having to share space or just she doesn’t play well with others. Whenever she goes on these rants, I find myself asking “What is the real problem?” Don’t get me wrong. Nicky is still a top ten rapper who can honestly out rap a lot of the men out here, but I’m disappointed in how she’s been responding to this wave of women’s empowerment within the music industry. Instead of embracing all of this new talent, her attitude has been more of a “bow down and kiss my feet” approach. Not only that, but her fan base is unhinged and she encourages their internet bullying. I do agree that people need to pay homage to those who came before them, but not at the expense of kissing someone’s butt all the time.

At this point in her career, Niketa should be developing new artists, creating her own record label, and investing in a business outside of music. Something that will secure her longevity in this industry. Where is her Fenty Beauty? Where is her Parkwood/Ivy Park? These are things that she should be focused on instead of arguing with fans on twitter, gossiping on a radio show, and defending sex offenders. Maybe the whole pretending to bi-sexual gimmick she pulled at the beginning of her career should have been warning sign of what was to come because the way she’s acting now seems to be one huge joke and I’m having a hard tine taking her seriously anymore.

This post isn’t meant to bash Ms. Minaj. I’m just a concerned fan who is hoping she decides to take a different route. The music industry is in a space where women are dominating the charts and taking charge. Thankfully, Meg the Stallion is leading the charge for unity among the women and I’m hoping that some of that will rub off on Nicola. Her career is no where near over and she has the potential to make great music with some of the new ladies. I always hope that when she goes on these extended social media breaks that she will come back refreshed with a new mindset. So far, it’s been the same old brash tone mixed with a little of victim hood and no accountability for the part she plays. I haven’t given up on Ms. O yet, but there is only so many more rants that I can take before I tune out permanently.
