What Rivalry?
Whenever I hear that Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have a match, I always think that Serena is doing this for practice. I mean, let’s face it: there is nothing competitive about their match ups. With the exception of one loss, Serena has beat Maria in every match for the past decade. So at this point, can you even consider this a rivalry? I consider something a “rivalry” when it is between two people and the competition is equal. This ain’t it. The recent match up between the two was no different. Serena put on her game face and beat Maria in under an hour without breaking a sweat. At this point, I don’t know how Serena doesn’t cast these matches as a waste of her time.
While majority of the world was watching Missy Elliott get her things at the MTV Music Awards, Serena was handing Maria another defeat. Serena moved on the court with such ease and beat Maria like she had to hurry back home because she had greens on the stove. Sis finished the entire match within an hour and had enough time to watch Missy Elliott take the stage. I’m sure Serena told her nanny to keep the baby up because this wouldn’t take long. Why does the world of tennis consider this a rivalry? I can give you a quick overview….
Next to Serena, Maria is one of the most recognized tennis players in the world. Not for her talent, just because of appeal. Yes, she has won some titles but compared to Serena, Maria doesn’t compete. Serena has won 23 Grand Slams, 4 Olympic gold medals, and 72 titles. Maria barely has half of that, but yet manages to out earn Serena in endorsements. Crazy right?? The reason for her out-earning Serena is simple and a tale as old as time. She’s a blond, blue eyed woman who appeals to consumers while Serena has been criticized her entire career for her looks and build. I could go on and on about how Serena deserves more than what she receives, but then we would be here all night. The point is Maria has been rewarded for years for being mediocre while Serena has dominated this sport and not been given half her due. I’m sure black women can identify with this ten times over.
Not only is Maria half as good, she tested positive in 2016 for doping at the Australian Open. You mean to tell me that even on drugs, she couldn’t beat Serena??? If it had been Serena, we would have never heard the end of it. They already think that Serena is some mythical person because she keeps beating everyone. Let’s not forget how she has been subjected to more drug tests than the average tennis player. I’m sure they are hoping to catch her slipping one day so they finally have an excuse as to why this black queen keeps beating their faves. They will be waiting forever because Serena is anti-drug anything and been vocal about players who dope in order to succeed. They can continue to gag from the haters bench.
Stop calling this a rivalry. It’s not and their match ups are amplified because Maria beat Serena that one time and they haven’t forgotten it since. I’m pretty sure Serena wrote that loss in stone somewhere and vowed that Maria would never beat her again. She hasn’t and last night was no different. Serena proved once again why she’s the best and how black women have to keep proving themselves after they already proved themselves. We stan a consistent Queen and we also stan a petty husband that supports his wife. Did ya’ll peep the shade Serena’s hubby threw from the sidelines??? A couple that shades together stays together.
